Managing expectations around further education
Families don’t always agree on what success is, and when one child goes to university, others may feel pressure to follow, even if it’s not right for them. Make sure they know one route isn’t better than another. An apprenticeship, job, or gap year can be as valuable as a degree.
When money means some choices aren’t available
Whether it’s a gap year, an expensive house share, or wanting them to pay their way more, talking about money is tricky, especially if it closes off some options.
Managing expectations early can save harder conversations later. Be honest about what you can afford and instead of a flat ‘no’, help them find cheaper alternatives that don’t feel like second best.
